Save Title X and Protect Women's Health!

In late February, the House approved a $317.5 million elimination of Title X family planning funds as part of the FY 2011 Continuing Resolution bill. The Continuing Resolution was not passed but Congress has approved a stop gap measure to keep the federal government running until April 8. In the meantime, the House and Senate are working to come to some agreement on a continuing resolution that will go through September when the federal fiscal year ends.
While we are uncertain about what budget measures may be passed and what the future holds for Title X funding, we must communicate the need for Title X to our legislators.
The Title X program enables 5 million women nationally to access health care, including breast and cervical cancer screening, birth control and STD testing and treatment. Cutting Title X funding would limit access to basic health care for millions of low-income women, men and teens. Here in western Pennsylvania, Title X funds help Adagio Health provide quality, affordable reproductive health care to 80,000 clients each year.
Every dollar spent in Title X saves $3.74 in Medicaid costs. So cutting $317 million in Title X will actually cost taxpayers an additional $1.1 billion in Medicaid. Cutting Title X makes no sense financially or as a public health policy.
- It is of utmost importance that family planning and Title X advocates across the nation be heard in response to the proposed cuts that would de-fund the program that helps millions of women access reproductive health care.
- You can ask Senators Robert P. Casey, Jr. and Pat Toomey to stand up for women who need access to birth control, emergency contraceptives, breast and cervical cancer screening, sexually transmitted disease testing and treatment and access to basic health care.
